Some popular activities to ring in the new year include parties and gatherings with friends and family, fireworks, dressing up, making a toast, counting down to midnight, and a kiss with that special someone after the ball drops. Other traditions from around the globe include carrying an empty suitcase around the block to bring a year full of travel (Columbia), banging loaves of bread against the wall to ward off evil spirits (Ireland), hanging an onion on your door for rebirth (Greece), and the popular polar plunge into cold water around the world that started in Vancouver, Canada. As we prepare to “Leap into the New Year” and start off fresh, reflecting on the past year before moving past it can help guide your intentions for the upcoming year.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://buildinghopesummit.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Dec-Blog-2.png” title_text=”Dec Blog #2″ url=”http://www.SAMHSA.org” align=”center” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” height=”832px” custom_margin=”14px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Reflection Questions: Take some time to think about the past year and write down your answers.

1. What positive experiences from 2024 are you grateful for?
2. What challenges from the last year helped you grow?
3. What is holding you back from something you have wanted to pursue?
4. How can I be kinder or more compassionate this year?
5. When am I the happiest or what brings me joy?
6. What do I want to release from my life?
7. How did I prioritize self-care every day?
8. What’s a favorite memory from 2024?

OK, now that we have spent some time reflecting on the past year, we can start to create some intentions for the next. This “new year” I encourage you to try intentions instead of resolutions. Sure, specific resolutions and goals may work for some of us, but instead of focusing on “doing” specific things, try setting intentions that offer some wiggle room with a broader approach of focusing on your “being” instead. This approach also allows us to focus on how we approach life, as opposed to what we accomplish.

Examples of Intentions for 2025: Remember, everyone’s list can have similar intentions, but the way you achieve them can be personalized to your own values and desires. I shared my own personalized version of this list for “inspiration” to create your own. Notice that there is some flexibility, not firm boundaries, in the way I achieve these intentions.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://buildinghopesummit.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Dec.-Blog-3.png” alt=”building Hope catchup header” title_text=”Dec. Be present (avoid social media in the mornings and before bed, revisit daily meditation)

2. Take care of my body (get outside every day, more mocktails- more info at boozelesssummit.com)

3. Practice gratitude (smile and thank service providers I encounter while running errands, try a daily gratitude journal)

4. Be inspired (listen to educational podcasts, step out of my comfort zone)

5. Feel rested (stick to my sleep schedule and daily routine)

6. I will listen and check in with others (offer a judgmental-free ear to anyone who needs to vent, call and check in with friends and family weekly, invite someone new to coffee or lunch)

7. Make time for myself and practice self-care (monthly therapy sessions and self-care everyday- snowboarding, hiking, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, dogs, book before bed)

8. Set boundaries (remember my work-life balance and saying “no”)

9. Be patient (allow extra time for errands and anticipate a longer wait or drive during peak holiday and tourist season, take deep breaths and settling techniques)

10. I will go with the flow (remember there are certain things I can’t control, I will be open to criticism and feedback)

I recently started facilitating community trainings in suicide prevention in my new role at Building Hope. While I was ecstatic to continue improving the stigma around mental health and educational efforts for the community, I knew I would have to face a personal long-time fear: public speaking. Throw in some computers and virtual sessions to a technology amateur and I was basically signing up for a self-inflicted nightmare. Sure, I was scared and already regretting some commitments, but I also knew that actively seeking some discomfort would also lead to some personal growth.

Stepping out of my comfort zone also led to me testing my ability to be open and receptive to feedback and advice from attendees in the trainings. While challenging at first, approaching this criticism and feedback to improve my new personal challenge reminds me it’s OK to “go with the flow” and work towards being a better version of myself. I also am offering myself some empathy and compassion knowing I am a work in progress and embracing a challenge that previously held me back from things I wanted to pursue.

While I may not have a list of resolutions or goals to check off my complete list, my intentions for the upcoming year allow me to focus on my overall approach and being as a person. Maybe you want to focus your list on your daily life, while others may choose career- and relationship- focused intentions. Perhaps as you reflect on your 2024 experiences, you can revisit a dream, try something new, or simply let go of something that may be holding you back. Regardless of what works for you, be proud of yourself and your journey. Happy New Year.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_4,1_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”58px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]Article by Alyse Piburn, special projects writer for Building Hope Summit County. If you have a story to share, reach out to her at alyse@buildinghopesummit.org.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://buildinghopesummit.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/BH-Logo-664px.png” alt=”sound healing” title_text=”BH Logo 664px” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Reflections and Intentions for the New YearAs the final countdown of 2024 quickly approaches, New Year’s Eve plans and traditions begin to form.
