global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the words may be subtle, the phrase tattooed along the forearm of Carrie Scheick holds a much deeper meaning. The expression inspired by a Bren<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Brown quote and written in her own handwriting is a daily encouragement for Carrie. Three simple words, \u201cown your story;\u201d remind her that while areas of her life have challenged her and are a part of her, those events and trials don\u2019t define her. She feels it\u2019s important to be real and honest when sharing your story and wants to give back to other people who are struggling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is power in storytelling. I can relate to a lot of people in our community by owning my story,\u201d shares Carrie. \u201cWe live in a place where it can be hard to meet people, find housing, and build healthy relationships.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Title&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>A Cross Country Move to the Mountains\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many residents in our area, a love for the outdoors began Carrie\u2019s transition from the East Coast to the mountains of Summit County. Originally from New Jersey, a cross-country road trip with her family first spiked her interest in the area. Ten years later, after studying Environmental Science, she decided it was now or never and made the move. After applying for various jobs, she accepted her dream job, working at Keystone Science School leading all-girls backpacking trips and managing the girl\u2019s STEM program focusing on the study of science, technology, engineering, and math.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also fell in love with snowboarding, working part time and spending much of her extra time at Arapahoe Basin. Although Carrie loved many things about her new life in Colorado, she also felt isolated and alone at times. She had previously been diagnosed with general anxiety and depression after dealing with the side effects of Lyme disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now across the country from her support group of friends and family she was having trouble managing the stresses of a new environment, new job, and new home in a healthy way. Her relationship with her boyfriend also began to struggle because of this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember crying in the shower. I didn\u2019t know how to regulate my emotions and began to have suicidal ideation,\u201d shares Carrie. \u201cI never made a plan, but sometimes I did think about what it would feel like to just go to sleep and never wake up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Title&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Turning challenges into personal growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Carrie confided in her best friend over the phone, she realized the severity of these feelings and the need to build better coping skills with her feelings of depression and anxiety. She continued working with her therapist from home virtually. She found solace on her snowboard, creating a positive outlet for her mental health. Unfortunately Carrie\u2019s relationship with her boyfriend didn\u2019t survive the challenges and the couple split up, causing additional stressors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these challenges Carrie experienced good personal growth in 2019 and was able to focus on her physical and mental health. She found a good living situation with roommates who made her laugh, and also began attending Building Hope connective events. It was at one of these events she discovered she was not alone. There were other people living all around her struggling with similar issues. She was inspired to even<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> become an ambassador for Building Hope, attending events as a leader and resource for her community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Title&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A big step backwards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; header_2_font=&#8221;|600|||||||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;11px||34px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as everything felt like it was falling into place, Covid hit in March 2020. She remained with Keystone Science School throughout the first months of the pandemic, but eventually in September Carrie lost her job. \u201cI joke that Covid took all of my professional outdoor education dreams and goals away, but it feels true, I took a big step backwards.\u201d Her feelings of depression and anxiety returned, as her life was not how she pictured it should be. She contemplated moving away from the area. Lockdown was hard, but she enjoyed the company of her two roommates, making the best of a hard situation and grateful to not be alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more tools and methods to deal with her stress and anxiety, Carrie once again began to rebuild her life. She applied for different jobs and in November a new opportunity arose with Breckenridge Grand Vacations. She started at the front desk at Grand Colorado on Peak 8 and soon moved up in the company. Her current position has her working with events and communications. It opened the door to many new opportunities. I have grown into myself, found a new job that I love, and even learned new sports like mountain biking.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After attending another Building Hope connective event, Yoga with Leslie Glenn, something clicked for Carrie. She enrolled in Foundational Yoga training and also remains active as an ambassador for Building Hope. She is honored to be a representative for the organization, and proud to connect with friends and provide resources for those in need. \u201cI had a friend feel comfortable enough to reach out and ask for help. For over 25 years she has been involved closely with fundraising and philanthropy efforts, for the last decade with Summit County. Candy serves as the philanthropy officer for the hospital foundation. She works closely with Building Hope to provide scholarships for individuals who come through the emergency department in need of mental or behavioral health assistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the pandemic started, Candy saw community issues escalate. Those issues included high suicide rates, substance abuse, job layoffs, and loss of family members due to COVID. She wanted to help. However, this is when tragedy struck her personally and she was forced to focus on healing herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.9.7\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.9.7\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Title\" _builder_version=\"4.14.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><h2><b>Turning Trauma and Loss into Community Healing<\/b><\/h2><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.14.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the fall of 2019 Candy relocated her elderly mother from Pennsylvania to an assisted-living facility in Denver. Candy\u2019s sister had been their mother\u2019s caretaker for a decade and Candy looked forward to relieving her sister. Unfortunately, a few months later Candy suffered her first blow with the death of her 91-year-old mother due to COVID complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That death was traumatic for both sisters. Due to a back injury, her sister had become dependent on painkillers. Eventually the addiction switched to heroin. Candy had believed that taking over the role of caretaker for their mother would be positive for her sister\u2019s substance-abuse recovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six weeks later, when the death of her mother was still fresh and consuming, she received a devastating phone call. A bad batch of heroin and fentanyl had taken her sister away in minutes. \u201cWhether it was intentional or not,\u201d Candy says, \u201cand I would like to think that it wasn\u2019t, I think she just couldn\u2019t cope with not taking care of Mom, not having that purpose, and struggling to find her own path outside of being a caretaker.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Title\" _builder_version=\"4.14.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><h2><b>Giving Back to Others can Help Heal your Heart<\/b><\/h2><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.14.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candy leaned on her support system (including her husband, stepson, cousins and immediate family) to begin her healing. She also utilized the Bristlecone Grief Support Network through<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> St. Anthony\u2019s Summit Hospital, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and connected with a therapist through the Building Hope website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite dealing with her own grief journey, Candy the Connector was inspired to turn her own anguish into something positive for her community. A health care scholarship was set up in her family\u2019s name to provide support for caregivers to advance their careers. She wanted to give back to a network of support that was crucial to her healing journey. \u201cPhilanthropy can heal. If you can be in a space to give back to help others, it can help heal your heart.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candy was also instrumental in the launch of the Summit County chapter for th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e OneDegree Website and App. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of donors and a collaboration from local non-profits, the app provides resources for families, individuals, and visitors to the community. Among other things, the app includes information about mental and behavioral health, housing, employment, and daycare options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all the positive work \u201cCandy the Connector\u201d has contributed to Summit County during her grief journey, she is already thinking of how to improve access for mental and behavioral health resources. Nearly two years into the pandemic it\u2019s clear there is a higher need and people are struggling. Nurses and healthcare workers at the hospital are burned out and working overtime. Local businesses are short staffed, while community members continue to struggle with housing and how to thrive in the county. Therapists are stretched thin and can\u2019t keep up with demand. There is still more work to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt takes a village,\u201d Candy says. \u201cIt\u2019s ok to not be ok. I want to share my story to reduce the stigma around mental health and help others find the hope and resources through my sharing. In the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer of 2019, she created a milestone goal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to run 50 miles for her 50th birthday. She signed up for a race in Tahoe for 2020, which was eventually canceled due to COVID. \u201cI didn\u2019t want that cancellation to not allow me to finish my goal.\u201d She worked with a coach, continued to train, and found an outlet in the outdoors and long runs with friends. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In honor of her sister\u2019s 65th birthday, she ran a 50-mile loop, the \u201cCirque de Summit,\u201d her own version of the canceled race. Candy concludes: \u201cDo your very best to not isolate yourself. It\u2019s hard to ask for help. People are prideful and don\u2019t want to burden someone else.
