Thrive this Holiday Season
The holiday season often comes wrapped in sparkly lights, festive music, and the promise of joy. But for many of us, it also brings stress, loneliness, financial pressure, or the resurfacing of difficult emotions. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or disconnected this season, you’re not alone — and you’re not doing anything wrong.
Mental health doesn’t take a holiday, so here are some thoughtful ways to protect your well-being while navigating the chaos (and beauty) of the season and getting a head start on those New Year’s resolutions!
Let’s start simple~
Sleep
Sleep is one of the most important indicators of mental well-being. Sleeping is not only resting, it is also repairing the body. While attaining the recommended 8 hours of sleep every night is unrealistic for many, prioritizing an earlier bedtime will improve mental cognition, physical health, and emotional stability. Remember…sleeping is not lazy; it is a form of self-care!
Self-Care
Speaking of self-care, the Holidays can distract us from our normal routines. During this time, it is imperative to mentally and physically check in on yourself! Find something you love! Self-care doesn’t have to be exercise, meditation, or a therapy session. Self-care means anything that brings you peace and joy. Some forms of self-care that I love are cleaning, blasting my favorite music, going for a drive, indulging in a favorite food, or binge-watching a good show!
Self-care looks different for everyone. Try not to compare your idea of a perfect day to someone else’s!
Balance Your Holiday
We all know the Holidays can be full of sweet treats and cozy days inside to escape the cold. While these are absolute non-negotiables to a successful holiday season, it is important to find balance. Bundle up and head outside for a walk to break up the day. Whether you walk for 5 minutes or an hour, anything is beneficial. Consistency over perfection will help live a balanced and full lifestyle.
Eat some nutrient dense foods! Include fresh food daily and try to cook at home!
Incorporate a fun NA beverage! You don’t have to not booze, just booze less! Keep yummy alcohol-free beverages on hand. Check out our Booze Less campaign here and enjoy a mocktail happy hour at one of Summit’s Blue Run Businesses!
Set Boundaries
Human beings can only take “so much for so long.” Spending time with family can bring joy and love, and it could also bring anxiety, self-doubt, burnout and frustration. If this resonates with you, please be proactive.
- Recognize your triggers and prepare in advance
- Define your boundaries clearly
- If you know that a gathering will be overwhelming, simply explain that you have to leave at a certain time and do not feel guilty about it!
- For triggering or controversial topics, respond with neutral statements and redirect the conversation!
- “That is interesting…have you watched any good shows recently?”
- Remember to incorporate self-care both before and after the occasion
- Not everyone will follow and understand your boundaries. Be prepared to have them overstepped and have a safety plan in place
- Remember that you are in control! Embrace the joy and leave the negative.
And finally…As Michelle Obama states, “No” is a full sentence 😀
