Transgenerational Impact of Trauma in Addiction on Client and Family Coping

What would happen to our treatment outcomes if we were to really treat addiction like the chronic disease that we say it is? This presentation will apply lessons learned from how chronic disease is managed in integrated medical environments, through the lens of medical family therapy, and through the lens of transgenerational and family system trauma theory. The goal will be for attendees to consider the need for a paradigm shift in how families are incorporated into the addiction treatment process. Attendees will learn about the phases of the chronic disease process and the developmental tasks for families in each phase. Dr. Barnes will discuss clinical implications and introduce Foundry’s family-centered clinical program for treating families who are struggling with addiction.

Dr. Michael Barnes, Ph.D.

Chief Clinical Officer of Foundry Treatment Center Steamboat

Mike Giresi, CAC, CTP, ICADC, NMP

Chief Development Officer at Family First Adolescent Services

Complex Trauma & The Addictive Process:

Self-Medication for a Broken Heart?

This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of adolescent mental health and substance use issues from the lens of complex trauma, including evidence-based interventions for assessment, clinical conceptualization, and treatment. Attendees will participate in self-guided, as well as group exercises to practice trauma-informed skills. This presentation will also provide demonstrations on how to apply clinical skills specifically oriented to addressing adaptive patterns of both nervous system dysregulation and shamed-based identity distortions. Attendees will be introduced to specific assessment tools that will aid in their ability to conceptualize complex trauma symptoms and behaviors through the lens of attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and developmental affective neuroscience.

Thanks,
Ravi
